Thanks to ongoing renovations and upgrades, children at ESC19 Head Start enjoy exciting, new play experiences at selected Head Start and Early Head Start playgrounds. The project began in 2019 and is in its third phase with JRV, Cesar Chavez, Isaac Camacho, David Sublasky, and Pete Duarte Head Start playgrounds currently under construction, followed by Sierra Blanca, Anthony, Parkdale, Barcelona, and Westside Head Start- scheduled for completion in late 2023.
Construction, Facilities, Maintenance & Support Director John Alarcon oversees the extensive project development. “The inspiration was to create a more progressive play area for the children,” says Alarcon, “In many play areas, we had outdated toys that the children rarely used - these new, imaginative structures will not only ensure that all our play areas are safe and ADA-compliant, but encourage creative, and inclusive outdoor physical activity.”
The upgrades include the installation of both traditional and interactive Crooked House Community Playgrounds, as well as soft artificial surfaces in place of mulch and sand.
