April marks Autism Awareness and Acceptance Month, a time dedicated to promoting understanding and acceptance of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). According to the Centers for Disease Control, autism affects an estimated 1 in 36 children and 1 in 45 adults in the United States today.
In adherence to the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, the ESC19 Head Start Disabilities and Mental Health team provides early childhood screening, intervention, education, and support for teachers and families of students with diagnosed or suspected ASD.
ASD manifests uniquely in each individual, presenting a diverse spectrum of strengths, challenges, and needs. Collaborating with teachers, parents, local education agencies like ISD and ECI ISD, community partners, and Head Start's Disabilities & Mental Health professionals create comprehensive strategies and modifications tailored to each child's learning style and needs.
Autism Awareness and Acceptance Month underscores the importance of neurodiversity in education and acceptance for all. Head Start's commitment to early intervention and inclusion in education continues to help children with ASD thrive in school and reach their full potential.
